Sunday morning and I’m already plowing through various projects. One fun one that has sat in my ‘in box’ for a couple months is the background information for Infosys project. This consists of me filling out a job application form for Infosys Consulting. See, I’ve already been offered and accepted the job, so now they need to see if I’m actually qualified for it.
I see the point in the application. It’s their chance to make certain that I’ve never been ‘convicted of a felony’ or something similar and as the old joke goes, “have you ever been convicted of a felony?” Convicted, uh, no not convicted. There is a good chance for some vital information to fall through the cracks.
I’ve looked forward to doing this paperwork like one looks forward to an upcoming root canal or watching snooker on the BBC. This is probably why the world class procrastination. Finally trying to clear the decks of old projects, I dove in this morning. First calculating my GPA from school (they don’t give one, so it’s a matter of doing the mathes, err, math and then finding all the little details that are often illusive like what day did I start the job I had 8 years ago, or what was your salary (It was charity, $0.01 would suffice) but at last I’ve assembled all the information into one convenient location.
Most of this paperwork was filled out with good cheer until the realisation that I’ve looked and assembled this information before, but where is it now? Damn! It’s on the old PC. But where on it? Filed under London Business School app? Home Office app? Green Card for Mrs. M app? Where oh where could it be?
Finally, I found enough information on the LBS app to fill out the paperwork correctly. This little information gathering exercise just pointed out one of my post graduation projects is a full scale reorganisation of all my files both digitally and paper based. It’s an imperative from Getting Things Done and frankly it makes a lot of sense. Chances are I knew sub-consciously that this paperwork was going to be a pain and procrastinated accordingly.
Information is of little good if it can’t be retrieved quickly. This goes for the MBA classes or making certain all my employment details are in order. Regardless, it shouldn’t take 3 hard-drive searches, two computers and a ton of paperwork to find out how much I made at the YMCA. But, without a little work and forethought that’s what occurs.
So I hope that means you’ll be traveling by way of Charlotte at some point — that pile of mail could use its own Removalist!
