Procrastination: India Edition

New country; new project (shadowing); same old techniques for procrastinating on work. Before leaving for India I completed the shadowing part of my shadowing project with Penny Newman, the CEO for Cafe Direct. It was a great experience. I have pages and pages of observations.

Now, I have to type them and organise them into a paper that needs to be submitted on 2 October.

I should have typed them before. I should be typing them right now. But, not yet. One final check on Google news. One final cup of tea. One final blog post. I think I’m finally ready to slay this dragon. Another MBA dragon that seems to arrive right after the old one is slayed (3rd Term: Straight As & the Summer Ball a success).

Time to do this.

Why is it that despite years of research on the proper way to present written work online company’s still post stuff in the format that works in print?

I remember reading a research paper about five years ago (that’s 2001 for those Neil Young fans out there) that discussed the best way to present copy online. Essentially, it’s widen the margins and make it one column.

When this is done, reading online is fairly simple. EVERYTHING else doesn’t work. Even most websites, mine included, sort of violate this rule with the multiple column concept but since the second column is navigation rather than information delivery it’s okay.

I’m currently reading IBM’s research into CEO’s ideas on innovation (summary: they are all for it except probably the folks at GM). It’s a PDF in two columns. Funny, a report on innovation is presented in an antiquated format. Oh the irony.
